Before Toilet Paper

It is hard to imagine what people did before toilet paper, but there was a time when toilet paper was not an item that was available. Depending on a society or cultures location, people often turned to natural items for toilet paper. They used leaves, bundles of grass, sponges, and more as toilet paper. It may not have done the job as effectively as toilet paper does now, but people made do just fine with the items they had available to them.

Invention of Toilet Paper

To find the origin of paper toiletry, one must look to the Ancient Chinese. Chinese emperors, looking for a new item to use, ordered researchers and members of their court to find a suitable replacement for the various other items that were used before. Eventually, an unknown inventor came up with the idea for paper toiletry, and this all happened during the early 14th century.

Modern Day Toilet Paper

Since the Chinese, toilet paper has gone through vast improvements in its design. The first time toilet paper was sold in bulk did not happen until at least 1857, when Joseph C. Gayetty sold sheets in large packs. His toilet paper also offered customers a more comfortable form of toilet paper because of the aloe that was added to each sheet. Large companies have become popular because of their production and marketing of toilet paper.

Modern companies

Companies such as Scott and Charmin got their starts in the toilet paper business as early as the late 1800’s and early 1920′s. Since then, dozens of different brands and styles have toilet paper released for the public to use. Toilet paper seems like a necessity that humans must have had forever, but toilet paper has changed and been adapted throughout history to please consumers and users everywhere.
