There have been different forms of ice cream throughout history that makes pinpointing the exact inventor is extremely difficult. Ice cream has been adapted, changed, and perfected since the first time that historians believed it was enjoyed. The following are a few brief facts highlighting important moments in ice cream’s history.
Ancient Times
The earliest record of ice cream consumption comes from the time of Emperor Nero during the early years of the Roman Empire. Nero tasked his subjects with bringing ice to Rome so that it could be mixed with fruits and other sweet toppings. This idea was the earliest and closest type of food to the modern idea of ice cream.
Ice Cream in America
There were many other instances of ice cream development following the Roman Empire, but another important moment came in the early years of America. Ice cream became a popular choice of dessert for Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. These two were known to ask for ice cream specifically. The tradition would continue during the Madison administration when First Lady Dolly Madison called for ice cream to be served at the White House.
The First Ice Cream Parlor
It may be difficult to find the exact person who came up with the idea for ice cream, but one thing that is for sure is that the very first ice cream parlor opened in the United States. The ice cream parlor was established in 1776 in New York City, and became a popular treat for New York City men, women, and children.
Further Advancements
Once ice cream and ice cream parlors were established, people began to experiment with flavor, texture, and production. Ice cream companies began to pop up around the world, and some of those companies still exist and are successful today. People are always updating the original ice cream, and it is a treat that millions of people enjoy every year.
